Tim: Summer break.
Good one, it's on me calendar. It would be good if there's anything on, anywhere this way, one of those evenings. I suppose that's a bit unlikely.
Re: CDs, I was thinking you must have some kind of ambient postman nicking your goodies, but apparently not - just a coincidence that nothing arrived? One for the queue, I'll definitely be needing an In Vitro Tide at some point, so if a good opportunity presents itself let me know, cheers.
Comments:
Steve: We'll come down one evening I should think - I'll have the boys with me. Even if it's just a frisbee session in the park, down to the pub etc.
In theory I did lose a set of 3 from SMD, assuming they sent them. The second set was not sent with recorded delivery so I wonder... It's great having so much (good) new music to listen to, and to have a list of stuff to get. I have several eBay searches setup including Surface 10; just a matter of time.
Paul's last day at school today barring exams. Bit of a landmark.

Tim: Off the hook
I realised on the way into work that we're already booked for October 21st, for that thing in Basingstoke, how weird is that? So we've all got an excuse.
BTW, you'll notice that I'll be "posting" and not "commenting" here, for the foreseeable future. All down to the ever-changing quirks of the web restrictions in place at my end. See how it goes.
Comments:
Steve: Yes odd that as Jam is normally in November.
Conrad Schnitzler has arrived and is pretty good, experimental but nice sounds, not the drones of say Irrlicht, and nice use of stereo. In fact not as experimental as *I* expected. Another geezer to add to the lookout list then. Original album plus about 20 minutes of extra tracks but that's fine as I have nothing to compare with.
The CD outfit in the US have responded to apologise for the delay so I may even see those ones as well!
Plan for the summer break at Nick's if he's okay with it:
Arrive Wed 26th July afternoon, hang out for a bit. Visit D at camp Friday in Bournemouth (not by sea sadly) - you might like to come Nick. Back to Nick's and stay 'til say Saturday evening. Plenty of notice and a solid idea of what's happening. How does it sound?

Steve: No I hadn't heard. Don't know any of the lineup. As for excuses I think we know who's the king of those, and it isn't me.
BTW that Spyra/Lang album is pretty stonking. Haven't heard the other one yet. The ARC album is good with some real drumming. Got the £50 back (in theory) from Orange, still no CDs from the US and no emails returned; no CD from eBay (Schnitzler) - email returned to say it was posted ages ago.

nick: thames ride
Good ride yesterday thanks Steve. I got home about 10.30, after managing to get on a slow train to Reading (all the trains had been delayed, and some cancelled after an incident at Didcot). So I missed the CC slot, sorry Tim.
Feeling a bit achy today, especially my backside, and have got sunburned hands and face (must have been pretty intense during that 30 seconds that there was a break in the clouds).
Comments:
nick: Mitchell and Webb (from Peep Show) are on tour, and appearing at the Anvil in Basinsgtoke on Sat 21 October. I don't always have much luck with links (they preview ok, but don't always work when I publish), but here we go:
Mitchell and Webb at the Anvil.
They are on tour, and there is a list of dates at this website.
Steve, fancy it? Tim, don't know if you watch Peep Show, but we could make it a lads' weekend. Fwiw it appears to be a weekend in front of half term (in Hampshire anyway).

Tim: No problem re CC. Mind you, judging by the wickoh it's Schnee Eifel East next, and we've never played that map, somehow.
Peep Show - it's a TV program is it? Anyway, I'm up for it in principle and don't mind shelling out for a ticket. But if I end up not being able to make it then what's the chance you could fob it on somebody else?

Steve: Hmm, Olivia Coleman may be with them eh? Right I've cancelled everything else and would love to come thanks despite my feeling of awkwardness whenever I see live theatre performed.
nick: ok 3 tickets booked. I'm sure I can get rid of one if Tim bottles out.
Saw Paul Merton + friends there last week: it was very much like "Whose Line is it Anway" with them doing stuff based on suggestions solicited from the audience.
Some of it wasn't great, but some was very funny indeed. Best was a sequence where Paul Merton was interviewing "an expert" who was actually played by three other cast members. In response to each question, the three had to take turns to say one word at a time, until they'd finished the answer.
Don't know if Sophie will be there with Mark and Jeremy. They're repeating series two on E4 at the moment btw, on Tuesday night (well, wednesday mornings) at midnight. So Tim, you've got a chance to see a bit of the programme...

Tim: "Bottles out" is a bit harsh! It's just that it's a bit tricky to guarantee that there won't be something more important going on in 5 months' time. Especially when, apparently, Mitchell and Webb aren't actually worth seeing and it all depends on the right women being there too...?
Steve: Lost CDs are being re-sent by SMD which is pretty decent of them (assuming they sent them in the first place), so that's the 2 for you Tim. Still waiting for one from eBay and 3 from the US.
Finished Inside Out by Nick Mason and really enjoyed it. Been playing a bit of Floyd this week in homage. Started Gulliver's Travels which is definitely heavy for a children's book.
Currently having a problem getting a £50 refund on an old handset from Orange from DECEMBER. The shop send them back to a dept that cannot tell them (due to the data protection act) why if there are problems issuing the refund. Two more weeks and I reckon it's the small claims court for breach of contract.

Tim: Excellent, those are the Spyras are they?
The imminent Namlook/Spyra release has a 5.1 version in with the normal CD.
So, er, what kit do I need to buy?

Steve: Yep, the Spyras. No idea what this extra disk is, CD or DVD-audio? Either way you need a surround-sound amp that does DTS which is pretty common these days. You almost have to go out of your way to buy a stereo amp! The trouble is, you need to add speakers and wires and I could never face this part of it.
Nick, have you moved your speakers either side of the fireplace yet? No, didn't think so.
Nick, have you moved your speakers either side of the fireplace yet? No, didn't think so.
Tim: It's CD, and I think I've established that you only need a normal CD player with a digital output to play it on. Then something to decode the signal, of course.
These surround-sound amps you mention, :-) I assume they're decent stereo amps too - any obvious suggestions? And, they DAC the DTS, do they?
BTW I don't hold out much hope for this CD being fantastic, but I've been looking forward to a successor to quad for as long as I can remember (ie last week).

Steve: I'll check my recent hi-fi mag for multi-channel amps if I remember. The problem for me is that you would have to spend a heck of a lot of money to get decent stereo as they have to cater for 5 channels in the same box. So I guess to get the equivalent of the Audiolab it would be about £1000!
I would've thought that you could feed the analogue output into the amp. Our old Akai videos could do surround and there's only 2 analogue sound channels on a VHS cassette.
The album itslef sounds unlikely to be good with his jazz guitar and daughter singing on it.

Tim: Yes, when I said the album won't be fantastic, I should have said it will probably be shite.
According to *the* authority on the subject, er, towerrecords.com:
DTS-CD
A CD encoded with DTS-formatted sound. A regular CD player can play this CD only when a line is run out of the digital output through a DTS-capable receiver, otherwise the audio will come out as static-like noise. A CD player's analog output will not work. A DVD player is not required since DTS is encoded differently on a DTS-CD than it is on a DVD. A DTS compatible DVD player should be able to read these discs when run through a DTS-capable receiver. The multi-channel output is 5.1.

Steve: Crikey this sounds like a nightmare, don't play it through your normal hi-fi as it's just data! I looked for a bit and gave up trying to find out about it - the Wiki version was all about the standard. BTW I was surprse to find that Tower Records in London is now a Virgin. The same stock and layout though.
Turns out the Takk I bought recently is not the best packaging despite being a book-style thing. And I can't get into it!
CDs being re-sent by SMD but haven't heard from the US lot - haven't answeredmy email yet.

Tim: Yes, they're all book-style things. It's a bit OTT having a special edition when the normal edition is already pretty good and totally non-standard. Like I told you in Berwick St, the spine is the clue (but not if you mail-order it, obviously). The place where I got a couple from don't have the S.E. listed any more.
Looks like this is the sort of hardware I'd be needing. And a containerload of speakers.

Steve: Yes, I think that would do it at 7x110W! Looks like a very impressive spec. with the added bonus of 'Screw SS' terminals.
I picked the TAKK up but assumed the standard copy was 'standard'. And it was in cellophane.

Steve: Good article (when you find the URL in the page source!). So who do I go with then? 1GB at peak times is a ridiculous limit. I'm in no rush though.
BTW Tim, we saw a bike with sealed hub gears and sealed hub brakes, hence the reference. Looked like a great commuter soultion for £400 quid. Then Nick was trying to get me to get and use a fold-up bike, maybe cycle to Hitchin (6 miles) and get that train in, then cycle 1 mile to the office. Hmm maybe not.
DiN Dub Autonomica (or whatever) is very good so far. Still no CDs from SMD and I can't seem to get an answer at the parcel office.

Tim: Morning lads.
I'm back in work today. Things deteriorated Saturday afternoon, and it wasn't until yesterday afternoon I started to feel realistic again.
Sorry about buggering up the weekend.
How did the ride go, nice and wet? And did I miss anything else exciting?

nick: Well... owing to a bit of a colossal oversight on my part, most of the planned route (except the beginning bit, which I'd ridden before) turned out to be footpaths: I'd misread the "beautiful nature walk" symbols as representing "bridleway suitable for cyclists". So after a bit of pushing the bikes through fields and carrying them over stiles we went on the (minor) roads from Alresford through Winchester to Eastleigh. Then we caught a train back to Winchester and cycled back to the car.
The weather wasn't great but we didn't get too wet and cold. As I was putting my bike away I noticed that the other bike had a puncture so maybe a threesome was just not meant to be.
I chickened out of a cycle ride yesterday morning (it was pouring) but went out this morning, jolly nice ride.
I hope you're well enough to go to the footie Tim?

Tim: Everything went according to plan then, all in all.
I'm not feeling terribly lively, but otherwise OK so an evening of sitting on trains should be fine.
Hopefully I'll be a bit more up for it tomorrow, we'll see.

Tim: Yes, good article. 1 Gig a week is a joke. Well, not that I'd use it up, but to call it unlimited...
nick: from my plusnet page, my usage recently has been 4-5GB/month. I think I must use a fair amount with work, downloading source trees etc..
My contract (Premier option 1) gives me guaranteed "15GB peak time", so I'm OK for now. I think that on this tariff if I go over that, then it just slows down the connection speed.
I should be on for an 8MB connection soon too, and a corresponding increase in upload speed which is good news for wiki users.

nick: Went out for a ride this morning, and I reckon I might have been on for a personal best time, but for the fact that it is dustbin collection day.
The dustbin lorry was blocking the road and various cars were waiting for it, so I weaved through the gaps and went along the side of it. Unfortunately this coincided with a bloke pushing a dustbin in front of me. Straight into it, over the handlebars, into a very pebbly puddle. Banged my head and landed on the same hand I hurt when we were out riding on Saturday.
From now on I'm going to wear a helmet. And avoid dustbin lorries.

Steve: Re: helmet, this is one of the few types of accident that it would help on, I reckon off-road in non-rocky locations it's probably not worth it. We've just been discussing helmets here (coincidentally) and the jury's out.
The reason Nick fell off on Saturday was because he was looking at me *nearly* falling off but valiantly regaining control of the handlebars. All we were doing was riding up a kerb ramp.
I hope you are suing the council for the guy not looking, oh, and that it doesn't hurt too much!

I suppose I'd better check they take bikes.

Steve: Nick, you may have my coat - lovely blue Ben Sherman jacket? Enjoy it while you can.
Still trying to track down the phone number of the sorting office to see where my CDs are. After a long call on various menu options on a 0845 number I end up back with the first person I was talking to!
Went for a run this morning, a grind but Ricky Gervais was funny.

Steve: Don't think the jumper's mine. Any chance of scanned versions of the virus review please as I'm about to renew in the next few weeks and Norton didn't come out that well did it?
Tim: Hello boys. A quick catch-up:
Oh good, an alternative to cement that's based on... oil.
Regarding the helmet jury, what are the cons? Discomfort, and...?
Nick, any CC slots this weekend?

Steve: Please reply today if you want to go to cheap tickets version of the LSO at the Barbican (Richard's arranging) for 15th June. Beethoven's Vth Piano and Shostakovich's 11th Symphony.
Re: Helmets - They make your head bigger so you may get a strike with one and would've got away with it without. They are not much good in high-speed car collisions. Some people say that motorists treat you with more caution of you are not wearing one. Insurance companies try to offer reduce damages if the cyclist is not wearing one.
Francis here reckoned his helmet saved his face in his crash - he cut his chin in the end.

Tim: Feedback anyone?
Morning Lads!
Well, it's Friday already. I'm having a bit of trouble planning out my weekend so far, will soon get it ironed out though, I'm sure.
I can keep posting suggestions, but they seem to go into a bit of a black hole. Probably that's because Steve doesn't care exactly what happens when or where, and Nick's busy at work?
I thought I was onto a winner when I bagsied the car, it meant no farcing around with trains and buses and if we do a circular route of any kind then I can transport whatever gear I need back and forth no problem.
Doing the straight NW - Netley ride clobbers that. So the "drive with the bikes" thing was an attempt to get back to an outing that starts and ends at NW so I can leave the car there. Maybe it's just not doable?
I've got a few other things to try to fit in this weekend - I'm off to Holland on Tuesday, need to get organised for that, along with the usual washing and ironing type stuff, and as an added bonus the oven has just packed in...
But mostly, getting out for a good ride with the blokes is the priority, and a bit of sat drinking tea watching/listening to rubbish would be good if that's still on the cards?
Comments:
Tim: Weather forecast for Saturday: heavy rain. Looks like it will be all clear until 10 ish, then rain coming in from the South reaching Reading by 1pm.
nick: Sorry tim I never see new posts; I get an email when someone does a "reply" but don't check it until then.
I keep starting to think of alternatives and realising that i've ended up with cars/bikes in the wrong place.
Weather means we probably want to start early Sat AM.
How about (1a) we start from NW on Sat AM, aim for netley, but since we're going via Winchester we can always cop out and get the train from there if we're too tired/weather too bad?

Tim: And the objective of 1a is... to maximise the distance we'll cover by train? :-)
Alternatives there are aplenty, it's getting any feedback on them that seems to be the tricky bit! e.g. Suggestion 6 (miles down the page) or my suggestion before Suggestion 1 (New post same subject). If I knew why they were honkers I'd at least feel like I was getting somewhere...?
The Early Start bit, yep.
Oh look, Steve's still stuck in yesterday's thread, let's hope he accidentally does a refresh.

nick: 6 is fine with me
So what I'm thinking is: turn up at NW maybe 8pm Friday for a bit of Naqoyqatsi and bad music. Up with the lark for a nice ride in the rain. Bit of lunch maybe, then head off say at 2:30, something like that.

I don't really mind which one, so maybe if we put down preferences and then work out the winner using some PR system. for me:
1st: 1a
2nd: plan b
3rd: 6

Meanwhile, what are the features of 1a, plan b, and 6 that drive your preferences? Like I said somewhere, 6 was designed to move the ride away from NW, but apparently that's not a factor?

Alpha:
Or just a circular route to Winchester (as mapped) and back (off the map).
And the variant Beta:

Either can be combined with plan B. Or, to be really obscure, by reversing them, with Suggestion 6.

See you at 8.45, I reckon steve will be here by then, don't forget to bring the DVD!

nick: This weekend's travel section in the guardian was all about low CO2 emission travelling. One of the articles was Is it OK to fly>.
Along the lines of the oil-based concrete substitute, it has the following to say about kerosene replacements:
Currently, the only real alternative is "synthetic" kerosene made not from oil but natural gas, biogas or coal. It has the major advantage of working within current aircraft and therefore does not need new costly infrastructure. In fact, there are already planes flying in South Africa fuelled on this technology - but made from coal and therefore not offering any significant emissions advantage over kerosene.

In fact, there are already planes flying in South Africa fuelled on this technology - but made from coal and therefore not offering any significant emissions advantage over kerosene.

Tim: New post same subject
OK, as I was mentioning to Nick last night, I can use the car (and avoid trains/buses/trams/rickshaws) as long as I can skive off mid-afternoon on Saturday.
So what I'm thinking is: turn up at NW maybe 8pm Friday for a bit of Naqoyqatsi and bad music. Up with the lark for a nice ride in the rain. Bit of lunch maybe, then head off say at 2:30, something like that.
Is that any good? I can have a rethink if that's not going to work.
Actually, lunch may not be so necessary, I can bring some sort of tucker that we can have en-route. Good plan? Or nowhere to stash it?
Comments:
Steve: I'm thinking of 'donating' Friday afternoon to the cause, when could you get home by Nick? I'm stupidly thinking I could beat the M25 weekend jam. I wouldn't be setting off before say 2:30 as I have to get home first.
nick: Hmm not sure I can get away very early on Friday, I have something I need to get finished. So I could be home by 6 but maybe not much earlier (there's likely to be someone around though).
On Saturday, if the constraint with Tim is to do with the car, then maybe it would be easier if we drive to Tim's, if we can take 3 bikes on Steve's car. I think trains are going between Netley and Winchester, so depending on what we're doing, we don't have to drive far (Winchester is only 10 miles or so from my house).
Need to decide what exactly the itinerary is I suppose. Steve, when are you planning on going back to Luton (no hidden agenda, just I don't know)?

Tim: Hmmm, you're worrying me now. How long are we expecting to be riding, roughly? All of Saturday morning not long enough?
Or is it the Friday evening thing that doesn't fit in so well?
Or maybe I'm just not keeping up.

Steve: Nick I didn't expect you to get home especially early, it's just that if I come down Friday I need to set off early or late. Late means getting to yours at 9pm earliest.
I have allocated the whole weekend to be down there so can come back as late as Sunday (late) afternoon). Maybe the Friday night is looking dodgy and we meet up with Tim again on Sunday - Tim we don't know your full availability. Nick do you have church Sunday AM?
As for riding time, I guess all of Saturday AM is long enough with an early start (dependent on when I come down).

nick: Well, I think the original idea was to cycle from North Waltham to Netley (or back), and I'm still pretty keen to do that. I am guessing that would take 3-4 hours (at a reasonably leisurely pace) - about the same amount of time as it took to get the flipping map done.
How about this. I'll call it suggestion "1" so feel free to refer to it as such, or make other suggestions
1. Tim gets to North Waltham in time for Saturday morning (either come Friday night to Basingstoke, or Sat AM to Winchester, we can get to either station to collect). Then on Sat we all cycle to Netley, and after a suitable recovery period, Steve & I get the train back to Winchester (with a bike each) and cycle back to my house from there (it is about 16 miles by road). My old bike will be left at Tim's but I can come and collect next week (I don't mind it being left in the garden with a sign on saying "please help yourself" in the meantime).

Tim: Well, if it's the effort expended on the map that you want to recoup, then we can all do the NW to Netley, break, to Botley, train to Winchester, bike to NW, can't we?
I suppose the catch is that you get the rusty bike back, is *that* what your looking to avoid?

Steve: I can't fault the plan. We could even pop down to see Tim on the Sunday and pick the bike up as part of that.
Tim: Here's another suggestion. I'll call it suggestion 6. It's based on a bit of guesswork that what Nick wants to do is a bit of cycling away from his neck of the woods.
6. Get all the bikes in a car (or two) and drive to somewhere on your route that you don't usually get to. Itchen Abbas, for example. Ride from there to Netley. Break. Ride back (same or different route).

Steve: Yep, In Vitro is pretty stunning, probably the best DiN I've found. His other album I got the other day is not as good but is still worth having.
So is anything happening on the Sunday?
So is anything happening on the Sunday?
Tim: Sunday will be chores, mostly. I might be able to rustle up some availability in the morning though...
Steve: Right down to Tim's Sunday morning. Bike ride: who knows. I've still to decide on when I come to you Nick, maybe aim to get there for 9-9:30 Friday night and keep the half-day?
nick: Steve,
yes I reckon you might as well come a bit later on Friday and save your half day. It's a while since I've done M25 on Friday night so I've no idea how bad it is, although M3 doesn't seem a problem when I go home on Friday at around 6

Steve: Right, we should all provide our own packed lunch for Saturday I reckon to prevent one person (Nick) having the burden. I can bring a rucksack. The weather forecast is not too great I see (hence Tim's rain comment I guess.)
Steve: Well for me yes :)
BTW I finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon and it was very good, cheers for that Nick, D's reading it now (maybe we do have stuff in common!). Now on Eleanor Rigby by Douglas Coupland - I love his writing style.

Steve: Whot no plan changes?
BTW I will eat before I set off tonight Nick, aim to leave Sunday afternoon (say 4pm).

nick: Bike ride 6th May
Well I planned a route which I think has a fair amount of off-road in it. It took about ten minutes to work out which way to go, and three hours to scan in the maps and join them together. There's a web page here including a link to a picture of the route (I've put red dots to indicate the way we're going).
I did a very rough distance estimate and it came out to 50km, which I can't believe is right, that's not much further than by road, but maybe Tim can run a spreadsheet on it and work out a more accurate value.
I'm assuming we're doing this next Saturday? So we need to sort out logistics. Steve will you be coming on Saturday or Friday? No problem if you want to come Friday and stay overnight, then be fresh for the ride. Tim, I'm assuming you can get here on the train, maybe bringing a bike? You're welcome to stay Friday night too or whatever suits.
If you want to ride one of my bikes (which I am not altogether convinced would be ideal) then I will probably need to do a bit of maintenance on it, so let me know asap.
Comments:
Steve: Well done Nick for this (and for sending the CTC email). I currently plan to come down on the train Fridy night with my bike. I have to leave London before 16:45 so it could be interesting. To come in I have to arrive in London before 7am.
As for the logistics of the 3rd bike, nightmare. Unless you drive it down one night and we train down and all ride back. Of course it won't fit in/on Tim's car will it?

Tim: Good map.
Shame about the shortage of bikes. I'll get the kettle on then, ready for when you arrive?

Tim: Incidentally, the route looks pretty direct, not necessarily further than by road.
As for logistics, trains are no problem of course. That helps a lot?

nick: If we're going from NW->Netley (I sort of think of that as downhill, so assume it'll be easier), then Tim could come up on the train on Saturday or Friday. If Tim brings a bike then it'll be in the right place at the end of the cycle ride. If Tim wants to ride my bike then I we would end up with an extra bike in Netley, although it's getting on a bit so I could just abandon it there.
Tim: Well, I still haven't got a bike. And I'm sure that once you've got your spare all spruced up then you won't be wanting to bin it - there is a handy tip at Netley though :-)
Here's an alternative plan. I train up to you on Friday night for a lad's night in. We all train down to Netley in the morning, and after elevenses cycle back to NW. Then it's one last train home for me.
Although it's uphill a couple of small advantages are that (i) we'll have the sun behind us and (ii) although I'll be doing three train journeys just to borrow a rusty bike there is some entertainment of sorts between each leg.
Just a suggestion, though.

nick: sounds good to me, although it looks like a 1.5 hour train trip from Basinstoke to Netley on Sat am, and we will need to cycle there from my house, but it does mean everything ends up in the right place
nick: (I mean that on Sat am we'll need to cycle from my house to Basingstoke station).
Could go from Micheldever, but I think that's more connections and takes longer to get to Netley.

Tim: Oh brilliant. For Saturday and Sunday:
---
All lines will be closed all day in the Basingstoke area. No trains will run in the area bounded by Farnborough, Winchester, Andover, and Reading. Most trains due to pass through this area will be replaced by buses for part of their journey and may make additional stops with extended journey times. Many services will start from London Waterloo earlier than normal.
---
For cycling we could work around this, somehow, but Steve's going to be stuffed for getting back to Luton.

nick: Well I could give Steve a lift to Reading station (assuming trains are running from there to London at the weekend).

Tim: Ride to Winchester, I guess? How far is that?
Train it from there to Netley (or Botley, if it's quicker/easier).

Steve: Tim, your suggestion is a great one, I was wondering for a bit if you weren't that keen to ride it. We need to watch the 3rd quaatssiii don't we Friday night?
Is it feasible for me to get a return to Netley Abbey and use it to stop off at Basingstoke or do I need separate tickets?
Got Arcturus by ARC (Boddy/Shreeve) and it is live Hampshire Jam 2004 (did we see this one?). Good sequencer stuff - 3 tracks. The only thing I would say is that it's a bit too trad berlin EM and not experimental enough. I've got another DiN on eBay coming and 3 ordered from the US for $36 all-in. D's going to kill me.

Tim: I had to double-check, but no that was the Hampshire Jam we missed. (Airsculpture were on YET AGAIN, for one thing, also Free System Projekt who we'd already seen once).
Steve: I see. I have use of the car but was trying to avoid using it. I don't feel guilty if there are no flipping trains. No bikes allowed on replacement services that's for sure. So I will come in the car - it can carry 3 bikes so please work this into the equation if you like :) Not sure when I would get to Basingstoke if I drive, may take the PM off of arrive a bit later.
No need to stick to the rigour of the Basingstoke-Netley route with all of the travel hassle is there?
