Comments:
Tim: I haven't deliberately done anything to it, and in my (limited) experience it does generally look like that except in the UK.
nick: ...I'll give it a listen now (I've got to spend the afternoon writing up my appraisal notes so need something that will keep me awake).
Got my bike yesterday. As luck would have it, Whyte just posted a reference to a review of it, which - as luck would have it - is a flattering one. I've been out a couple of times and it is well comfortable (maybe as comfortable as Steve's Felt).

nick: Not sure why I read Guardian's review of Gary Barlow's album - or maybe I am: couple of good quotes in there...
"he has the air of man who might well own a pair of driving gloves
"there moments when you wish the real Gary Barlow would stand up. Sadly, when he does, you swiftly wish he'd sit down again."
"This House... turns out to be a song about how much Gary Barlow likes his house, a topic that's both clearly heartfelt and incredibly boring: you listen gripped with fear that the next verse is going to be about his automatic garage door, or the neighborhood watch scheme."

Steve: Pretty funny, don't tell Carol, she is a big fan and met him once. She wouldn't put my briefcase under his desk for some reason though.
Have you seen this? You can see it tomorrow Nick.

nick: cool! I'll have to bring my camera again! Speaking of which here's another picture of the railway bridge on my cycle route
Steve: Crikey some resolution there! It's good if you zoom in and have just a few diamonds with blurred background.
Steve: Now it's too late for Nick to back out, there's loads of stuff on Youtube. I've not checked out the big band stuff but here is a live version of one of their best tracks: HERE
nick: Nice... well they seem to be able to be technically accomplished at any rate. Audience doesn't seem to be very animated.
nick: Got my bib tights and did 20 miles last night in them. They're pretty effective (legs didn't feel cold at all).
Steve: Our Stopsley Maths teacher was briefly on a BBC4 programme about Logic the other night. I thought he might be on as he was Charles Dodgson mad. Still got his book somewhere.
Not a bad programme if a bit thin.

Tim: I listened to some of Dance by Phlip Glass last night. Mainly number 3, which is now going round and round in my head, I'll have to get home and play it again.
Before it started I couldn't remember how it went but after .5 seconds it had all come back.

Steve: Been listening to archive R4 Great Lives and it came to Leonard Bernstein. Matthew Paris said that during research he looked on Youtube and then ended up watching tons of this sort of thing and I can see why. Better get those symphonies on tonight...
nick: Did the Evans Hampshire Sportive today. I think that's the longest I've cycled in one day (bit further than Basingstoke to Luton). Quite a few familiar roads that I've done by myself or with Tim.
Felt like some of the bits at the end were a bit spiteful - when I thought I knew where we were going they'd insert a little loop of extra distance.

Steve: Very good average speed. I didn't go out this week at all so you are definitely a lot fitter than me now.
nick: Had a bit of trouble with the brakes actually - both front and back were squealing quite a bit, and the back one seems to have got very weak (it's as if the cable has slipped or something, and I didn't have an allen key to adjust it). What do you do about squealing discs, Steve? And (I don't think this is it, but) how do you know when the pads have worn out?
I've done about 450 miles on the bike so far.

Tim: It looks like the trouble with the brakes came on about half way round. After that you were a bit cautious and slowed down a bit.
Steve: No idea on squeal, I get judder on the rear MTB. Try emery paper on the pads? Alcohol on the disks?
Hydraulic should auto-adjust inwards and you have to look down the gap to see how much pad is left. They are not really user-serviceable.
You may have water in the fluid, this will kill the power. Unlikely though. Back to the shop...

nick: Tim yes you're right my speed did drop the further through the day I got...
Steve yes now you come to mention it I remember that the brakes are meant to be self-adjusting. I am owed a first service from the shop so I'll get them to look.
Means I'll have to use one of my other bikes while that one's being looked at though

Steve: Hmm I've not had the DiN announcement yet. The previous one with Dave Bessell & Parallel Worlds is one of the best on that label. But then they are all pretty good.
Tim: As Ian Boddy pointed out, if you buy it from Bandcamp you'll be able to get a free FLAC. Or are you ready for digital-only?
Steve: I have one of theirs which is digital-only but I don't like the idea. It's just files that get lost in the noise. I find it hard to play a whole album via lap-top as there is too much temptation to switch about.
nick: New developer here just asked me if OK to listen to music (I had my headphones on). I said "OK so long as it's good music" he said "It's System of a Down, what about you?" I said "Kate Bush". He said "I think I've heard of her..."
So Steve, I need some recommendations for stuff I can say I'm listening to.. what stuff is like System of a Down? Something that makes me seem hip.

Steve: I quite like System of a Down and have seen Serj Tankian (lead man) live. I have albums by people of that list:
Soundgarden
Deftones
Rage Against the Machine
Pearl Jam
Nirvana

nick: in the meantime, a brake update: the bike shop sent my rear brake back to supplier, who have confirmed a fault (leaking fluid) so will replace it.
However they don't have any replacement units in stock so are going to send a mechanical assembly to be fitted in the meantime. I can collect the bike at the weekend, and they'll let me know when a new hydraulic unit is available which they'll swap for me.
All seems a bit of a palaver, maybe I should have stuck to rim brakes!

nick: I guess Tim will get the Sergio Agüero reference, I had to look it up. This interview presumably is to puff his upcoming tour, which I'm going to see at RAH with Tony and Jonathan
Steve: No not heard of that rubber stuff, does look amazing. I have used the equivalent which sets rock-hard.
Don't have a picture in mind.
Need to start thinking about Mogwai. A guy here said he saw them once and it was so loud it hurt. Surely not at the RFH.
YOU HAVE YOUR TICKETS, OVER...

nick: Yes, I've definitely got my Mogwai ticket.
I bought a couple of CDs and have been trying to listen. They don't *sound* like they'd be particularly loud, but thanks for the heads-up: I'll bring my earplugs.
Don't think I have anything on for Fri 24/Sat 25 so there is scope for doing something other than just the concert.
