Tim:  I'm off
See you in a couple of weeks.

Comments:
Blogger Steve: It was a let-off, just 20 miles in sunny Hertfordshire. On road so dead easy then an evening of trying to digest overcooked rice (my fault) and fun faffing with Spotify which it turns out has no more invites to the free service.

Blogger nick: Tony pointed this one out

degree at plymouth

"Each year of the course is complemented with opportunities for practical surfing."

Blogger nick: just ordered re-issued curious feeling from play.com (£14.99).

And by coincidence I've acquired a AV surround receiver/amp thing from Uncle Phil, who bought a new one and didn't want the old one any more. Not sure I want this one actually - it's quite big and bulky and I don't have much in the way of speakers to connect it to... Maybe Steve would like it?

Blogger Steve: Re: Degree - doesn't surprise me!

Re: Curious Feeling - why is it £18 on the Genesis site?!? I did play it recently and still like it but we all need to buy new stuff :)

On the amp side I am strictly a stereo only with a possibility of sub-woofer addition but I'm not even sure I can be bothered with that. Watched some of the Krautrock programme, good so far, but was very very impressed with Synth Britannia - I'd say it was better than Prog Britannia.

Blogger Steve: Tim must be back by now with loads of holiday tales.

Have joined the Barbican for £10 a year so will see what that gives me - advance booking notice at least. For a good cause though anyway.

Blogger nick: I just started "Bomber". It's quite sobering to think that when the book was written (1970) the events being described were ~25 years in the past. I can remember 25 years ago, and it doesn't seem like ancient history. But WW2 seems to me to be a different era completely.

Blogger Tim: Got back yesterday and I'm at work today hurrah. Not much news though. I didn't read as much as I expected so Das Boot is still in the queue. I did read a book I bought at Gatwick, called Churchill's Wizards, but I suspect they had a hard time thinking of a title because it's about camouflage, deception, secret agents, intelligence and stuff from 1914 to 1945, mostly British. Some of it was to do with Churchill, but it's a somewhat rambling tour. Pretty good though.

Nick, WW2 was fundamentally a different era, because we weren't around then. Maybe it's a bit like the Permanent Waves syndrome?

And as for surround, you just need speakers then, I've still got a pair in the garage to get you started :-)

Blogger Steve: Funnily enough Deborah said a similar thing (Bomber) yesterday - her Nan would talk about Nazis and the war, and when we look back the equivalent time period it's not far at all.

Started Cupid's Dart by David Nobbs and have to control my laugh impulse on the train. Why didn't you tell me about this one Nick?!? We've met him - bless.

Blogger nick: Tim, yes maybe WW2 is different because I wasn't there, but it seems *really* different. The Falklands War must be about as far from us now as WW2 was when he wrote "Bomber". I can remember the Falklands War. It's what "The Final Cut" was about. That feels pretty recent to me, and not completely different from now.

"Cupid's Dart" yes I did quite like that one - I'm glad you're enjoying it Steve. Did you read "Pratt a Manger"?

Article in today's paper about Sufjan Stevens

Blogger Steve: Shouldn't we be going to see Avatar at the IMAX??? Booking starts tomorrow I've heard for Dec 16th onwards and will fill up quick I should think. Let me know when good dates/days would be. I can probably get rid of spares here.

Trying again with Vaugham Williams. Symph #1 is filled with strident singing although there are some good bits. 2 (London) is pretty good, 5 is very good, 7 (Antarctica) is pretty good although some faff in there. 5 is closest to being a classic. The 7 disk set I have is £15 at Amazon.

Been trying with Prokofiev 4 and really struggled so need a few days rest an a try on the hi-fi again. 1 I have always loved, 5 is very good and 7 is not bad so far. How do people get the time to do this?

Blogger Steve: Damn, spelt antartica wrongly.

Blogger nick: re:avatar funny you should mention - I was just discussing this with my brothers. I'd certainly be up for a trip with you lads in any case, any empty date on my calendar is likely to be a good bet.

Blogger Tim: How much *more* different do you want?

The Falklands feels pretty recent. WW2 doesn't feel recent - you have to calculate it.

(How much older does WW1 feel than WW2?)

Meanwhile, the results of the calculations have all changed. When we were kids, anything 27 years ago would be several lifetimes, now 27 years is about 0.6 lifetimes.

Blogger Tim: Crikey, everyone's been posting. Avatar, have I heard of it?, count me in. Are we talking weekdays? If so, I should be available after work, Mon Tue Fri preferred, not in order.

Blogger Tim: Antarctica - you got it right the first time!

Blogger Tim: Nick, how many portable-md-power-supplies have you got? I'm hoping mine is knackered (otherwise it's the player), have you got one I could test it with some time?

Blogger Steve: Well Avatar is using a new 3D technology without glasses that is meant to be much more realistic. Let's hope the CGI is better than he used on Titanic! So even if the film is not great we should see it, and where better?

We could do a weekend if that offers better scope for meeting for longer.

Well the symphony is called 'Sinfonia antartica' so who knows what's going on there - oh it's the Italian version apparently! So I was right on our spelling.

Blogger Tim: Antartica, yes that rings a bell now you've explained.

I've got football matches on these Saturdays: 19th Dec, 16th Jan. Also, I've just noticed, Wed 30th Dec.

Sundays, not so keen but generally free.

Blogger nick: re:power supplies - I have a fair number of them and I think they're not all the same. Some are in the loft, which means lost forever. I'll see what I can find and maybe take some pictures of them.

Blogger nick: ..or actually, what might make more sense is if you do a picture/description of your power supply so I can look for a matching one. I don't tend to use them much - MD player charges off USB and in any case I am using my MP3 player for that nowadays.

Blogger Tim: OK, I didn't know the new one was USB. The previous one was an NH-1 iirc? Surprisingly, that has a different power requirement (6V) to my NH-900 (3V) - thanks, minidisc.org. What did you have before that, any idea? Anyway, that one is bound to be in the loft. So mainly, if you could just have a quick look for 3V psus, that'd be great.

Blogger nick: Yes I have a NH1 which sits on a little cradle to charge IIRC. I think the cradle plugs into both USB and mains, I can't remember if you can charge it directly from the mains adaptor. Anyway I'll have a hunt around see what I can find.

Blogger nick: Some interesting comments about music in this article from BBC website

Blogger Tim: I see booking is open for Avatar for 16 - 31 December, and it's 165 minutes long, erk!

Under the circumstances then, Sundays are fine with me. Or I can probably wangle to get to the 17:40 on a weekday. It seems like Saturdays are out for me (football 19th, no trains 26th).

Blogger Tim: ...or I can take a day off work between about 16-22 Dec.

Blogger Steve: I'm struggling to find decent seats I'm afraid - 30th Dec 9PM looks okay, is this week any good? - I would be working.

Blogger Steve: New post for a picture....
