Steve:  Bike

Well here it is - sorry for the terrible pictures, bad case of fringeing around the white frame!  What can I say but an unbelievable improvement.  Feels a lot lighter and steering is def lighter, shifting is as easy in either direction - how have they done that?  Prob will fit bar-ends as it's difficult pulling uphill with straight bars.  Does muck up the look of it even more though :)

Done a bit more ripping to portable disk - going for WAV as Mixmeister doesn't support esoteric lossless formats.  Got some KC on at the moment.  Random play is not very random yet as I only have a couple of bands done.  Was doing A-Z but am trying this method.  Ooh some PM Gong, excellent...  And no adverts :)

Comments:
Blogger nick: love the white cables/handlebar grips/saddle/wheel rims, but what's going on with that grey water bottle???? you need a white one!!!

Blogger Steve: It's in hand don't worry. The rack makes it look like a shopper but nevermind. Almost been over the handlebars a couple of times, those brakes are serious! Also tried braking one-handed and am not used to it. Saddle seems firm but comfy as well.

Blogger nick: > Meanwhile I should be available for a Sat a.m. ride, if that's any good?

Right, you're on. I'll stick it on my calendar

Blogger Tim: OK, how are you for timing? 10am at MD sounds easy, I expect 9am is possible if you need.

Nice-looking bike, Steve. Are you coming too?

Blogger Steve: No we have a Guides thing Saturday or I prob would have.

Blogger nick: Just had an email from amazon about a bargain cd/dvd set only £12.99

Blogger nick: Apparently news from Tokyo Game Show is that Ico and SotC are confirmed as future HD releases on PS3

Blogger Steve: Ah, forgot I had ripped my yes 78 cassette, it's just cropped up on random.

I quite like Mind Drive from those albums and had forgotten the live stuff! Maybe I won't rip classical at this rate as they are too long to listen to at work.

When is Incantations coming? - I couldn't find any word and the oficcial channels are uselessly out of date.

Blogger Tim: I can't see any Oldfield news either.

Ico etc., I've been seeing a lot of rumours lately, excellent. Just waiting on the white PS3 now.

Blogger nick: Tim - yes lets go for 10am at MD

Blogger Tim: OK see you there.

Blogger Tim: Yesterday's route, probably: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=4050568

Blogger nick: that's remarkably similar to the one off the GPS app

I'm not sure how to convert my one into a pedometer one though.

Blogger Tim: I've just checked opencyclemap, and sure enough some bits of our route don't seem to be on there. Maybe you could upload them, but with a DON'T TRY GOING THIS WAY flag?

I might be able to do next Saturday, btw...?

Blogger nick: Possibly can do this Saturday morning - will confirm

Steve, how's your bike? Been out on it much?

Has Matthew gone yet? I'm not sure when term starts for him.

Blogger Tim: Sorry, tomorrow's looking a bit tricky now, better give it a miss.

Blogger nick: Cat update - two of our cats died in the last couple of weeks; one we found dead, the other was in the vets with kidney failure before having to be put down. Suspect that they'd come across something poisonous.

Today Aslad has been showing symptoms so he's been to the vet too; looks like may be the same thing. Not sure what the prognosis is yet.

Blogger Steve: Yes sorry again to hear about that.

We had a couple of days off recently without worrying about boys being in or out. Having said that Paul got knocked off his bike by being overtaken and the person immediately turning left in front of him. We've all seen how easy it is to happen. Just a bit bruised and shaken we believe.

Doing art again, same old same old, it's too difficult.

Blogger nick: One for Paul: The 2010 Lancashire Road Club Open Hill Climb

Blogger nick: Cat update - last cat has improved after being hospitalised at the vets for the last week and is being allowed home tonight. We've been a bit distracted by this so sorry for lack of updates recently

I think Tim may be on holiday at the moment?

Next week is ReGenesis (Thursday) - assuming Tim is still up for that?

Blogger Tim: Hi, I'm back. Sorry to hear about the cat news.

Regenesis, tanks for the reminder, can't wait.

Blogger nick: Regenesis - I didn't think they were as good this time as on previous occasions; maybe the new band members haven't got quite as much experience. Also the sound was sometimes a bit distorted. Still good though - they played everything off "Foxtrot" except "Time Table". And Cinema Show was good as always.

Anderson/Wakeman last Friday was surprisingly good. It was mostly what I expected - they played a mixture of new stuff (they've got a new album out) interspersed with Yes songs.

The new stuff was a bit twee, but in fact it did sound pretty good. Jon's voice was amazing - I had been expecting signs of age/illness, but to me he sounded like "Jon Anderson". And he talked like Jon Anderson too. And while the arrangements weren't complex or overblown, I think Rick is a pretty talented player so it was a pleasure to listen to him.

Most of the material was Yes - from memory:
- Yours is no Disgrace
- Starship Trooper
- Your Move (singalongajon section)
- And You and I
- Turn of the Century
- Roundabout
- Long Distance Runaround
- South Side of the Sky (a bit)
- Soon
- Owner of a Lonely Heart
- Time and a Word
- Sweet Dreams

I was surprised at how much I liked it (even the reggae version of "Time and a Word" was listenable) but it was partly because they were obviously enjoying themselves and really seem to get on well together. Rick told a few stories (pretty funny) and Jon told a few stories (mostly fell flat, but you don't mind because he's so cute)

So I was glad I went

Blogger nick: oh, they did "The Meeting" off ABWH as well - that was really good

Blogger Steve: Well done for updating, no news here but I do check it from time to time. I told you Rick was funny from the Planet Rock radio show.

Blogger Tim: I was surprised by how many early Genesis songs I don't know. Also, I remembered him being a better singer than he was last week. But it was still pretty good and I'd go again.

Is there scope for us to try and line up any weekendy/day off type stuff next month-ish?

Blogger nick: Tim, you must have known "Can Utility and the Coastliners"? I was really excited when they started that one.

Some Brook concert footage on youtube - the intro on the guitar is a bit shaky but the keyboard solo is good

Yes we ought to try and do something - I have a load of holiday to take and so time off is not an issue. Only weekend I'm busy that I can see is 12-Dec

Other news: We're just about to put an offer in on a house in the village - not sure what will come of that but we would be hoping to move before Christmas.

Aslad seems reasonably OK although he's not as fit as he used to be and has lost a lot of weight. Not sure how long he'll last (maybe years for all I know) but it's made us feel a bit bewildered (the outside world seems a lot more hostile than it used to)

Had a nice email from Matt. Not heard anything from Paul lately

Blogger nick: We (Tony/Geoff/me) went to see Nils Lofgren at the Brook on Friday.
I think this was the most expensive gig I've been to there - £28 - and
it was sold out so pretty full. I suppose he's best known for playing with Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, stadium rock. But this was an "acoustic" set of his own stuff.

I have a copy of his live acoustic CD and I really like it, which is why I wanted to go.

It was just Nils + one other guy, who played keyboards (mostly), trumpet, guitar, as well as tap-dancing. Nils played mostly acoustic guitars, but also some electric, and also did some keyboard himself, as well as one number on a harp.

The music was, as Tony (who'd never heard any Lofgren at all) a mixture of boring and brilliant. Some of the songs were just a bit dull, but some were fantastic, and he can *really* play guitar. Most impressive to me was how lazily careless he looked - like he wasn't trying at all, but the stuff he was playing was pretty complex. And the organisation was fantastic - roadies handing him guitars at every song change. But he's been touring for over 40 years so I suppose he knows what he's doing.

And presumably he enjoys doing it - he must be able to fill venues bigger than the Brook, and must be used to playing to much larger crowds with Springsteen.

So I was really glad I went.

Blogger nick: Tim, looks like this Saturday could be a goer - are you around for a trip back to Luton for the day?

Blogger Tim: Ooh, could be. Will get back to you.

Blogger nick: well I'm intending to drive to Luton and back on Saturday, so can give you a lift

Blogger Tim: OK great. Got any timings-ish in mind?

Blogger nick: re:saturday, not checked with steve, but probably going reasonably early-ish, say 9? and coming home reasonably late-ish.

Someone at work asked me if I was going to participate in this cycle event

I think I might be interested in the Saturday one (off-road), how about anyone else?

Blogger Tim: All clear for Sat. MD at 9:02 then?

Following Saturday, have a home game, good excuse.

Blogger Steve: Crikey, see you Saturday then.

Blogger nick: ok - I'd expect we'll be in Luton by about 10.30

Blogger Steve: BTW Tim is there anyone out there doing stuff like Boards of Canada????

Blogger Tim: Steve, did you try Christ? Can't remember.

Blogger Steve: Nope haven't yet.

Blogger Steve: This comment has been removed by the author.

Blogger Steve: I guess if you bring one bike I can supply a spare one. MTB or road assuming the weather will be okay. Doesn't look very good so we can just faff about I suppose.

Blogger Tim: He was in BoC before they properly got started, or something, so that's the excuse for the resemblance. Also, on the same label as him (Benbecula), Prhizzm is in the same genre. Yimino is another possibility, have I actually got anything by them? I'll check.

On the bike front, maybe we should aim for a nice long walk instead? Less faff.

Blogger Steve: Ok we can aim for autumn colours if they haven't been blasted from the trees over the last couple of days. Been amazing this year I notice.

Blogger Tim: Nick, I found the floorplan that you pretended didn't exist, interesting. Steve, wasn't the geology field trip alarm the intro to Incantations Part 2, or something v similar?

Blogger nick: Oh... I haven't been able to find the floor-plan myself. Are there any flaws in it?

re: tomorrow I expect to be home by 7pm, is it ok for you to pick me up sometime after then or do you want to be earlier?

nick

Blogger nick: btw, I think I got your cold, Steve - cheers

Blogger Tim: 7 is fine, we'll pick you up then-ish.

Is this the right house?

Blogger nick: oh yes, that's it, well done!

Do the plans look OK then? Apart from making it obvious how hard it'll be to get the car in to the garage...

Blogger Steve: Yes thanks for coming Saturday. Didn't want you to go home empty-handed but surely no way you ccould have it already, mine is still in full-swing.

Had a bowt of enthusiasm and luck and found 3 DiN titles at SMD for £8 each - ones I don't already have so ordered them!

I thought the Gelogy thing was something more obscure but we knew it was Oldfield. Will have to have a think. One of our class Debbie Goodman(I think) is often on my train and looks pretty similar to me. But don't worry I won't be introducing myself, she'll only ask how you are Tim if she can work out who I am.

Blogger nick: I think I left a blue (?) carrier bag in your hall Steve - I think it would have contained some anadin and some razors and maybe some pens. In case you were wondering where it came from. Don't think it's got anything in it that I desperately need though

Blogger Steve: Yes that carrier was a puzzle. It has a receipt for $8000 at an Apple store so I'm keeping that for you. Actually it was for Apple TV whatever that is? It's a different world...

Blogger Steve: BTW new Alan Partridge stuff as of last week(!) HERE

Won the quiz again and the 3 of us struggled to drink last week's prize of £50 as the barman can't add up. Pretty tired today therefore.

Blogger nick: As it happens I've been watching the first series of "I'm Alan Partridge" which I picked up on DVD for £4. "Got your big plate Alan?"

Watched the Fosters thing - OK but felt a bit odd. Been watching "The Trip" which I think is pretty good, although quite a lot of it seems to be taken up with them just doing impressions

Been off work today feeling pretty bad. Have recovered a bit in time to go to the concert with Tim and Tina. I hope I don't sneeze too much

Blogger Steve: Yes feeling rough here as well. Won't be long Tim...

Yes the AP is not top-notch but worth watching.

Blogger Tim: Was there an Oldfield single or B-side or something that sounded like Incantations? Or was related to it? Still trying to pin it down, and failing.

Blogger Steve: I dunno! I'm sure it was not from albums we had so must be that.

Blogger Tim: Just found this. No idea what it sounds like, I've got a copy in the garage somewhere, I'll have to bring it down.

Blogger Steve: Wow a real project for you! I remember it being pretty jaunty but that's all, if I heard it again I'd probably know.

The new Hergest Ridge sounds really nice so far (orig mixes). Am I going to have to buy another version of it????

Not another sore throat - is this the cold you gave me Nick?...

Blogger nick: I definitely remember "Guilty" - you can hear it on youtube. Wasn't it on "Exposed" as well?

Blogger nick: ps my cold is mostly gone now, thanks.

Blogger Tim: Not Guilty, the B Side!!

Blogger Steve: Well done (on all counts)!

BTW that recent Bark Psychosis album is proving to be a bit of a winner, wasn't sure at first. Too much singing for you Tim and too miserable for you Nick.

Think I'll pass on the Evans event, let us know how it goes Nick. Still feel rough.

Blogger Steve: Good news from the Camel site:

"This is officially the last time we will talk about Andrew's health. The bone marrow transplant has been a complete success, and I think the dark days are well and truly behind us. As I've said in past newsletters, he continues to have some challenges to face, but he is a strong-willed individual, and he will find way to overcome them. So, it's no longer about health problems. It's about the music..."

Live DVD out although from a while back.

Blogger nick: what happened with the walker's rain prediction bonanza then?

We have a load of crisp packets if anyone wants the codes

Blogger Tim: Oops yes, forgot about that. According to Deborah it drizzled. But:

"Hi Steve

Oh well, it didn’t rain across your selected grid-spot 27861 during your predicted timeslot on Thu, 11 Nov this time.

But remember, you can continue to make a prediction everyday on where you think it will rain, right up until 16th November 2010. Each time you could win £10!"

Blogger Steve: Nick, are you falling off the crisp wagon then? It has ended now though. They gave away over £1M.

Paul had a good phone interview with Detica and Matt has his RAF one today. Stress all round then.

BTW it was a spur of the moment thing - went to see Tortoise supporting Broken Social Scene at Koko in Camden Monday. Saw it in the Guardian mag Sunday evening. Tortoise excellent and an hour of stuff. Other band not so good, 9 members and mostly songs, 5 guitarists at one point is a bit much. God Speed You! Black Emperor sold out both nights and added another one so they must be pretty popular.

Blogger Tim: New node album imminent:
http://www.emportal.info/viewtopic.php?t=4918

Blogger nick: Oh, I quite like the other node album, so even I'm interested in this.

When looking for Guilty b-sides, I came across this video yesterday, which is a lovely watch.

Blogger Steve: Another Node album flipping heck it really is Christmas! Also does anyone want to go to this:

Penguin Cafe Thing - was very good at Bestival and way too short. Plenty of £20 ones left.

Blogger Tim: They are also at the Anvil the next day (forgot about this, it was in the Einaudi programme). I'm not dead keen but could fit one of them in esp. if we were doing anything else?

Blogger Steve: OK good point if they are on down that way. Mid-week in London is a bit crap as well. Keep looking for when The Bays are on but Nick wouldn't like that one. Rush are touring next year and tickets on sale Friday, can't decide if I want to spend the money or not...

Blogger nick: Penguin Cafe thing at Anvil on Thu Feb 10th sounds good to me, I can book if you want, who wants to go? We can sort something out for the Friday following I expect

Blogger nick: re: Rush - is this the tour when they're doing all of "Moving Pictures"? They were pretty good last time, apart from dodgy sound the start, so I'd be interested in supporting them again

Blogger Steve: O2 this time which has good sound I think. I'll try to book (just 1 for Nick) then as I have Friday off. Need to check on the Anvil date...

Blogger Tim: OK, Anvil and probably the Friday looks good to me.

btw any house news?

Blogger nick: Steve, I'm assuming Rush is 25th May? that's what I can see on the web sites

Will there be a chance to take another photo like this?

house news: well we had a mortgage approved, so I think we're waiting now for solicitors to sort out searches and exchange dates etc. I think it looks like being on schedule for a move before christmas

Blogger Steve: 2 tickets booked for Rush, not as good as last time but better sound quality. Worry about money nearer the time although if you start to struggle with the mortgage and two houses I may have to review that.

I'm clear for Feb if you want to book.

Blogger nick: ok I will book penguin thing at anvil. I assume 3 tickets, unless Tina wants to go..?

Blogger Tim: Just go for three, or we might end up with a planning nightmare. Cheers.

Blogger nick: penguin cafe thing has been booked for Thu 10th Feb

I provisionally agreed last night to go to see Andy Parsons at the Anvil on Fri 11th, without realising it would clash. So I've said I've changed my mind about tickets for that.... unless you two would like to go and we could book that too? (not convinced you'd be interested but I mention it on the offchance)

Andy Parsons at Anvil

Blogger Tim: Not too fussed either way, but also there's the option that we split up at that point, and you go to the show while Steve and I train it home.
Depends what the larger-scale plan is, really.

Blogger Steve: Gigs 2 nights running seems a bit much so probably pass on that one and we can either wreck the new or old house while you are out, or come home or go to Tim's for the next leg.

Blogger nick: OK, Andy Parsons tickets hadn't yet been booked, so there's no risk of us going to that.

Re: new house - I think searches have completed, so things are progressing.

Blogger Steve: New post coming up as this one is too long - no great news...
