Steve: IoW

Tim, are you volunteering to plan the route? If so, is it on-road or off-road? Which bike do I need therefore?
Comments:
nick: Steve, you didn't attach a photo, and this blog makes it hard to do that. This is the only way I think I can do it
Tim: I'll do everything shall I??
OK yep I'll have a look for/at the map. Probably do some off road...will let you know.

nick: well done on the photo tim - I did look around in the dashboard thing and couldn't see how to do it - it wouldn't let me edit steve's post - so perhaps it's something that only the admin can do.
Tim: Friday's route is coming along. What's happening, are you guys kipping down here Thursday night?
Steve: I don't mind - Nick can decide. I will prob cycle along the river to Nick's work if he is there that day. I would return home either Sat afternoon, maybe early Sun morning.
nick: I will be at work on Thursday, so if you want to come to the office that day.
Might be easier for me to stay at my house on Thursday evening, come down Friday morning first thing if that's OK?

Steve: Yep I'm quite happy with an early start Friday. We could train it and be extra-green if you like Nick. Just trying to work out how to carry my clothes etc on my MTB without panniers trying to avoid a hot rucksack.
Tim: The nationalrail site works badly from here... this is what I can tell you so far.
Trains from Micheldever leave at hh:10, via Hedge End at hh:34, arriving Portsmouth Harbour hh:18
Passenger Ferries to Ryde Pier (not the Hovercraft which can't take bikes, nor the car ferry to Fishbourne) leave at...
10:40 (if you catch the 9:10 train)
11:15 (won't be in time for that)
12:15 (if you catch the 10:10)
12:40 (if you catch the 11:10)
Ferry takes about 20 minutes and tube trains at the other end are designed to coincide.
I can't get ticket prices, but I believe you can get an all-through ticket. Also I believe you can use a network railcard on the whole thing.
This could mean it's worth you getting the 10:10, even though there's an extra 35 min delay at Portsmouth Harbour?
Also, could be worth checking at Basingstoke ticket office and maybe getting tickets in advance, rather than trying to sort it out on the train? Just a thought.
One more also, do you want to stop off to eat here Friday night?

nick: OK fares look a bit complicated, I'll need to look into it later on.
E.g. train from MD (9.10) -> RYP (11.02) shows up as £43.60 for two adults w/railcard one way
But all the trains after that (the next one is 10.10->12.37) is £28.80 for two adults w/railcard so maybe railcard doesn't work until after 9.30

nick: re:shanklin - disregarding the hovercraft ones, the first one after 9 is
MD 11:10
PH 12:40
RYDE 13:08
SHANKLIN 13:31 (via "Island Line")
cost £33.40 for two adults w/railcard
There is a corresponding one at 9.10 which costs
£50.60 for two adults
Return prices for day return are £41.90 and £63.40 respectively, so far as I can work out

Tim: OK, well done.
As for the 10:10, you're right it shows you the hovercraft one, but that's because it doesn't know you're taking a bike... there is a normal ferry a bit later (12:15) that it doesn't bother to tell you about. This option must also be £41.90.

Tim: Nick, have you noticed how whenever we've nearly got a plan together, Steve makes a different suggestion?
nick: It does seem like training from B'stoke is fiddly. So driving would be simpler. Would it be best to drive to HE and then train from there, or drive to ferry terminal?
Or drive to HE and then decide what to do.
Or drive to HE and then decide what to do.
Tim: Confused. What's the catch with Basingstoke? It's the same train as HE.
Parking anywhere in Portsmouth looks to be £8 for 8 hours, £10 all day.

nick: Re: train from HE I was thinking of there being one that started after 10am and so would be cheaper, but in fact I don't think that applies.
Tim: OK, no, not from MD anyway.
I'm thinking we don't actually need to get there early, five or six hours riding/breaks is plenty, what do you reckon?

Steve: I'll fit in with what you are doing. BUT are we staying at Tim's Friday night? If so we need to take clothes so need to stop off at the house to drop them. Does this have a bearing on the train as we would have to get off at HE and back on again?
See you outside your office around 6PM Nick.
5-6 hours riding is fine.

Steve: Forgot this: D can drive down to Basing if we are going to be there Sat PM/eve. She could take me and the speakers back although I am happy to train back Sat evening (without speakers).
nick: > 5-6 hours riding is fine
he said "five or six hours riding/breaks". Don't forget the "breaks"
I think staying at Tim's on Friday might make sense - that way we get to spend more time with the old boy on Sat. Only issue is that I think Lesley may be away friday night in which case Ella would be on her own. So will talk with Lesley this evening.
re:Deborah + Matthew coming Saturday evening - it would be nice to see them, and I think Lesley might be back then and would be keen. again maybe we can confirm this evening (Lesley is away in Essex with work at the moment but coming home later)

Steve: Yep don't need to arrange D until Saturday morning. Doubt Matt would come but you never know. Wow the weather looks excellent!
Tim: Friday night?? OK! Almost certainly worth driving to HE then. I'll get some tucker in.
Can you bring a duvet, we've only got 1 spare.
Will look out for an update tonight.

nick: so I need to fit steve's bike into my car on the way home from work. I knew I should have taken the speakers out last night.
Tim: Excellent. I can now adapt my handwritten & to look like et and use it and etc at every opportunity.
Gmaps pedometer says 33 miles from Shanklin station to the beach.

nick: oh yes, that's mine. Sorry about that. I never actually use the thing, but if you could stick it in the garage then maybe I'll pick it up some time (don't post it back to me whatever you do!)
How are you feeling today? I went out for a ride this afternoon and legs were fine, although I took it easy, and kept my speed below 60mph.
I'll stick the pictures up later

nick: Some pictures are here.
There must be something wrong with the "timer" mode - it's made me look squashed and dumpy.

Steve: Well done on the pics - I'd better look out the paint set then...
Spent most of yesterday gardening so didn't get a ride in. Booked AH for tomorrow night - Gary Husband on drums which will make a nice change.

nick: Steve, I can send you a higher-res version if you want.
I looked for where the Rush movie is showing, and it seems like it's on in three cinemas in London, all of which are showing it this evening only (no further showings). Well, perhaps we can wait for the DVD then.

Tim: We went for a decent walk yesterday, no problem, and me bum's stopped hurting too, today.
Can't wait until next time.

Steve: Actually the 5th/6th July is not looking very promising for me as I am off the following week. It is the Wales holiday - how did I manage to forget that? I even booked a dentist apptmt for the 12th this morning which I now need to move.
