nick: Came home to suspiciously clean kitchen floor on Monday - Ella had cleaned it after the washing machine flooded. The reason the washing machine flooded was that the door seal had come off (I think she must have yanked it out or something). So spent a couple of hours fixing it yesterday. Got a video from youtube which talked me through it - pretty amazing resource!
You have to stretch a couple of "retaining springs" around the gasket/seal thing, and they're *really* tight. The video didn't show this exact bit - he just explained what he'd done "I didn't film that bit because the air was so blue while I was doing it"
Managed to do it, but my fingers and thumbs are a bit sore today

Steve: What possesses (5 S's) people to film doing it??? Do they fix something and go, "That was awful, let me do that all over again for the camera"?
nick: The one I was watching was (I think) a professional plumber who'd been called out to fix a machine, and filmed himself doing it (with a certain difficult bit left unfilmed). I'm not sure what the motivation is, except the warm glow you get from being helpful
Steve: Excellent, our vacuum cleaner seems to be broke now so I have ordered new brushes and will have a go at fixing it. D thinks I am being a miser but I will risk £10 and some black-hands fun to save £100. Don't think I'll video it as they is stuff out there.
nick: What surprised me a bit with the washing machine was that the two screws on the back that you had to take out first were the ones with funny shaped heads (are they "security heads" or something?). Luckily I do have a set of screwdriver heads including one that fitted. Other screws were just normal Phillips ones.
Steve I would suggest making a note, or taking pictures, or when you're unscrewing it. I still have 2 little screws left over after I put the machine back together and I couldn't work out where they went!

nick: Just happened to do a google search for "binary" and was surprised to see how many results there were
nick: Been listening to the new "Daft Punk" album which you can currently stream for free on iTunes. Irritatingly catchy. People on the net have been comparing them to Boards of Canada, but I'm not sure I can see a connection..
nick: I kept thinking about what Steve had said - not really sure whether I believed it or not, but until yesterday had always been away from a web browser when I wanted to confirm. But you (and Paul) weren't winding me up: there's no predicting what kind of apple tree will grow from a pip
nick: I just realised I've been working here for 8.5 years now, which makes it the longest I've stayed in one place throughout my whole career (17 years at Digital/Compaq/HP, but moved through three positions in different groups while I was there).
nick: Tim good to see you back. We've really been enjoying all the photos.
I've still got tomorrow pencilled in for cycling if you're up for it. Weather looks fair. Can probably do Sun or Mon instead if you want

nick: Tim sorry change of plan, a load of people have turned up so I'm not going to be able to make 8.30 after all.
Tim: Nick, the weather looks OK for Saturday so I'm contemplating another ride. Is there an option of a 9am start?
nick: Hi Tim,
Yes Saturday morning's fine. I am picking Ella up from work at 7.30am - after that I'm free, so could manage 8am at MD if you wanted, but 9am either end is fine.

Tim: The wind is still from the North, and it's downhill, but if 8:30 at Hedgey is better for you we could pencil that in, otherwise 9 at your end.
Tim: When I got back from hols all my work passwords had expired, so I did what I usually do and based them on a recent album, in this case Eilatix (by Lorenzo Montana, whose previous albums were on Fax). Trouble is, I keep forgetting what the album is called. Exlatix? Eitalixl?
nick: Along similar-ish lines, I bought something in a shop recently and used my credit card, and the total amount displayed on the machine exactly matched my PIN. I felt distinctly uncomfortable typing it in.
Tim: Nick, still on for tomorrow? I reckon I am. I'll work out a route, and text you in the morning from Hedgey station (or with an excuse).
nick: We have some flags on the street outside my office. Prize for the first person who can tell me what they're for
Tim: They're for testing your eyeball manoeuvrability - if you can look at different flags with each eye you get the illusion of a proper union jack.
Tim: Nick, I'm available later, anything in the area 5pm to 7:30, could probably fit in a couple of barnies if you've got time.
nick: Flags answer: they're to celebrate the forthcoming royal event. I guess perhaps they'll take down all the blue ones if it's a girl, and take down all the pink ones if it's a boy...
Steve: Hmm it was hilly at Windsor from memory but you will be going slowly :) But you have to get £90 sponsorship...hide...
I just called the garage and we got through the MOT oh yes. More interesting was the Mark Isham hold music. I was tempted to tell the receptionist that I had the album but worried that he has been lumped in on some easy-listening compilation. Not that I would scare the woman.

nick: Metric madness
Steve, I bet the receptionist had put that music on deliberately, hoping against hope that someone sensitive and thoughtful would be able to identify it so she could have a nice chat.
What's the number?

nick: Had quite a busy week but freeing up now. Saw Lesley briefly as she came back from Scotland on Wednesday night, but flew to Spain early this morning.
Tim, I am available for PitF this evening at 8.00pm if you can manage it? Also available for a ride tomorrow if you're available. Weather looks promising.
Sunday evening is Tubular Bells for 2. Do you want to have supper at my house first (or after - it may be a short concert if they're only playing TB)?

Tim: All good suggestions, but as it stands I'm probably out tonight, busy Saturday morning, and have some work lined up Sunday that I'm not sure when's going to finish (will definitely get to the show though). But I'll try and get more of a clue about that today.
nick: Tim, I could do a ride tomorrow afternoon/evening if you wanted.
As you may be able to tell, I'm pretty much at a loose end tomorrow.

Tim: BoC, yes, Steve announced it here in April.
Sat pm not entirely out of the question, I'll have a think.

Tim: Nick, I'm too lazy for cycling today. Generally available for PitF later though, especially in the 5-8pm area.
nick: I was asked to do the church Holiday Club website but said "no" (I think I've done it for the last nine years). It is quite rewarding to do it but it's quite a lot of work and because I'm doing hardly any web stuff in between, I find that each year I have to spend several days trying to teach myself again how wordpress/CSS/javascript works.
So this year I'll be providing help to whoever does it, but won't have responsibility - what a relief!
I was thinking that since Tim has a camera now we could try all three of us to take a picture every week on a specific theme.
So I thought, I'll use a random word generator to pick a word for the first picture. It said "spermatozoa". OK, best of three.
Next word was "covert". Any takers?

BTW should be OK for pitf tonight with a bit of luck.

Steve: Well done for saying "no", tell Deborah how to do it.
Did the random word generator look at your search history by any chance?? I might be able to do busstop but am I going to get arrested in the process?
I'll start a new post with the view from the window in Brixham, I still can't get over it...
