Tim: Saturday route 8 Aug.
On the gmap-pedometer.
Still only 26.5 miles! Quite a lot of offroad though.

nick: nice one. I had been going to start a new post and stick a couple of pics on that I took this morning, but I don't think I can do that now. They weren't that good though...
nick: not sure if you can edit an existing post? maybe I'll have a go this evening.
anyway, happy birthday steve! perhaps the internet access in Wales is read-only?

Steve: Yep thanks for the birthday wishes. Just got back today and we had a great time with only about 4 days written off by rain. Internet connection was very slow and only worked wirelessly in the childrens' bedroom so it was too much faff certainly for uploading. Pictures maybe later but with it being cloudy a lot of them are pretty dull. Not having a TV was good.
Tim: Sounds like a good relaxing break, did you get some reading in? Cheers for the postcard.
Nick, next cycling opportunity looks like Saturday...?

Steve: Just read the paper really and some mags - New Scientist etc. I think I prefer it to the Lakes as it is much less crowded and just as awesome to look at if not more so. Not so many walks though - i.e. footpaths.
Resumed the Bestival spreadsheet so will update as soon as I can, it's taking ages to visit every crappy MySpace page! Lots of missable electro-pop but should be more than enough to see - it sold out a few weeks ago.

nick: Tim sorry not to have replied earlier. Probably can't do next saturday, I have a shakespeare play at 2pm (Troilus and Cressida). I also realised I'm seeing As You Like It tomorrow afternoon. And I didn't get study guides for either play from the library...
Steve good to have you back.
Steve good to have you back.
Steve: I could make myself available Sunday if that's any good. D is away. Could do Dartford route or something else your way possibly.
Tim if I bid on a teapot (I broke our one) in Southampton can you pick it up do you think pls?

Steve: I knew Spotify was too good to be true, Nick you probably already read this from the Guardian
nick: I could (and would really like to) make Sunday but I am meant to be getting the website ready for church holiday club next week so probably should be leaving some time for that... hmmm I'll try and get as much as poss done before then though to leave open the possibility
re:spotify - I've not used it yet - not really sure what to make of it, given the article you referenced. Although I do think that the way we consume music is changing - Thom Yorke recently said that he didn't fancy doing albums any more and was more inclined just to release individual tracks. I wonder whether the idea of an "album" that you buy from the shop is going to disappear quite quickly. And bands seem to be moving to a model of making money from live performances rather than royalties from CD sales.
In other news, we just won the bid to supply the replacement XMPP server software for jabber.org which is quite a significant deal in terms of prestige: they are an open source organisation so for them to go with a commercial product is a good endorsement for us. Although probably our support load will go up a bit...

Steve: I know I'm old-school but releasing tracks in very small batches seems hopeless from a 'this means something' point of view. And MP3 only mostly. I can understand not wanting to go through the hassle of release and artwork and PR but it still makes sense to create something of substance. I'm tempted to get the Harry Patch track (great reviews) but it's MP3 and what do I do with it?
A few pages to go on the final Churchill volume - 6 has been pretty boring surprisingly. Too many conferences.
Don't worry about Sunday, it was just a thought.

Steve: Just heard AABB so not sure what he was worrying about! He wants to drop to 2 but maybe this will change his mind.
nick: Well I think Thom Yorke was talking about the stress and effort of "making an album" - I can imagine, that as you get older, you're less inclined to put yourself through that kind of thing (although I think it probably still be worth it from an artistic point of view).
Just listening to the Harry Patch thing on youtube - does sound good. And it's only £1 to download. They've also got another song on their website to download for free "There's other stuff in various states of completion, but this is one we've been practicing, and which we'll probably play at this summer's concerts. Hope you like it."
Maybe you need an MP3 player Steve, Tim's just bought one (although he pretends it's for Tina)
re: matt - well done boy!

Steve: Ahhh 'practicing'!!
Yes I know it's only a pound and for charity. Their albums (esp In Rainbows) sound amazing on hi-fi so why are they limiting to MP3 downloads?!? And yet we have so much marketing force behind Blue-Ray, I assume the average person can tell the difference with DVDs and not MP3/CDs then?

Tim: Harry Patch rang a bell but I couldn't remember having heard any of his tracks.
Then I twigged.
Thom Yorke, though, never heard of him.

Steve: Question mainly for Tim I guess. Have you managed to get into any atonal stuff at all? (Still working out what this is.) I just got the excellent-looking book 'The Rest is Noise' so will be doing some research. Listening to the recommended Messiaen's 'Quartet for the end of time' which sounds promising but of course painful at times. It has an interesting history.
Tim: I'm not sure I have, really, nor have I tried very hard. It seems pretty inevitable that if you eschew musical traditions the listener is in for a bit of a rough ride. Good luck!
Steve: BTW bought the triple Last Train to Lhasa for £4 at lunchtime so we will see what it's worth... Record Fayre every 2 weeks nr Liverpool St station but lunch is not long enough for a relaxed look as it's a hike.
Steve: Actually the first disk is okay - a bit cheesy on the rhythm section but otherwise not bad. Recent purchases - Santana Caravanserai (very good) and Prokofiev complete Romeo and Juliet (dunno yet).
Finished Churchill now I need a recap by reading his summary volume at some point.

Tim: I haven't checked the forecast, but I should be available for cycling Sat am if anyone else is.
nick: tim, sorry for the delay in answering. think I'll be in Exeter for the weekend so can't manage saturday, sorry. have been a bit tied up in the last few days doing the Holiday Club website.
Steve: Currently listening to the Alpine Symphony Prom on R3 - good to hear a live version despite some minor coughing.
Boys 'safely' at Reading, Radiohead!!!!!
