Steve:  One Careful Owner

Couldn't work out how to add a picture in a comment but I did add to the previous posting...

Comments:
Blogger Tim: HE'S GOT THE BIKE IN THE HALL!! Careful, might get varnish on the tyres.

Blogger Tim: Oh, and £5 for the Uncertainty Principle - very impressed. But put it towards a brake block or something, well done for getting rid of it.

Blogger Steve: Thanks for the donation of the great Ian Boddy album. His DiN releases don't seem to be a lot better but are packaged musch more nicely. I did my latest batch on the 5p listing day and it was so slow to upload the images I nearly gave up. Saved about a quid though and on these slim margins it's worth it. I'm looking out for yellow bottle cages to match the theoretical bike, and maybe yellow bottles as well!

Blogger Tim: Is this one yellow enough?

Blogger Steve: Tim, yes it's yellow enough and all of theor stuff included postage. I need 2. Quick trip to Berwick St and I picked up another Paul Schutze which luckily I don't already have - sounds the same old same old though :) And a Planet X which is a £2 risk - saw them mentioned in a modern Prog article.

Had a bit of a result from an email I sent to the Luton cycling person, she has replied within 2 days initially and then the next day again. I'm in love (again)...

HI again Steve,
I will add you to my list, when the PC allows me to open it :-(
As for the items you ask me about - let me explain =-

(I complained that while the road lanes were great, to go straight on you have to cross the side roads as a pedestrian)
First of all Chaul End Roundabout - this has been an experiment in
going some way to opening up larger roads to the less experienced and less
confident cyclists. The idea was to find some way of getting a cycle
lane across the larger roads, but in a way that cyclists don't have to
join the main lanes of traffic to do so. We are very pleased with the
ease of turning left from any of the entrances - it means that cyclists
don't even have to slow up particularly. However, like you, we all feel
that the other crossing points (if the cyclist is going straight across
or right) is attracting pedestrians to use the area and is also still
too difficult, due to the speed of traffic exiting the roundabout.
However, the upside is that this roundabout is getting some interest
from other authorities - any new innovation gets other people thinking
and can inspire new ideas for dealing with block points for cycling (or
other modes of transport).
What we are interested in is putting in enough incentives to cyclists
so that they want to use their bike on all the roads in Luton. Hatters
Way is an excellent quick way between Luton centre and the edge of
Dunstable and, as you say the cycle lanes are great - (apart from the
brambles which are getting dealt with, but they belong to landowners next to
the road .... we have to ask permission before the council can cut them
...)

Could you please change the sign in Round Green that
says Buses Only so that cycles are included as this is
a good short-cut.
I will pass this on to colleagues. However, probably the main reason
why it has not already become cycle and bus lane is that because other
road users are not used to it and therefore will not expect cyclists to
turn right across the traffic coming onto the roundabout from Stopsley
direction. While it is a useful addition to cycle facilities, it will
probably not be a priority, maybe though, it could be a quick win! I
will see what others say - there may be other safety aspects that I am not
aware of.

Could we have some cycle parking in Stopsley? My
insurance policy only covers me if the bike is locked
to something immovable.

I have been negotiating with HSBC bank in Stopsley (Hitchin Road) to
put 4 cycle stands there. However, they have taken nearly 6 months of
regular contact to get back to me and get any kind of negotiation going!
We are nearly there, which just leaves asking the contractor to put
them in for LBC. That sometimes takes a bit longer again.
My colleague will be marking them out on the ground in the next few
weeks, so keep an eye out and let me know if there are any issues you can
see with where they are due to go - they need to be within the
bollarded area but as far away as possible from the cash point to avoid
security issues there. So many interests to take into account!

Hope to meet you at the Cycle Forum or on a bike ride or other event
some time soon.
Pauline

Blogger Tim: Don't get your hopes up, she only said she'd add you to her list.

Blogger Tim: Oh, and which Schutze was it?

Blogger Steve: Erm, Annihilating Angel part 2? Wasn't listening properly but it's typical stuff of his. The Planet X is definitely promising - proggy with heavy guitars, no singing yet. People here at work are saying how good Coheed And Cambria are - likened to Rush. They saw them at Reading. Intend to go to Porcupine tree next Friday with Jon here at work but i got to the box office too late last night, try again tomorrow I reckon.

Blogger Tim: Can't say I've heard of them? Their wikipedia entry makes them sound pretty scary though.

I've almost got a gig lined up, Campbell Kneale (/Birchville Cat Motel) 4th Jan (!) London, that's all the info so far. Might have to lend you a cd or two to see if you can face going.

Blogger Steve: Weekend Alert!
Saturday 7th Oct D & Lesley & Ella are going to a concert so Nick and Tim you are welcome to come to us if you like. I should have a few spare bikes by then :)

Blogger Tim: Availability cockup there I'm afraid - off on hols that day (back 18th).

Blogger Steve: How do WE manage it!

BTW my neck x-ray showed no skeletal problems which is good news. So it's all 'soft tissue' stuff causing my headaches which must be treatable so I need to resume physio (at my cost). Plus do some boring exercises.

Blogger nick: yes, I'm available on 7-oct as it happens. Will start doing some training asap!

article about cycling clubs in the guardian this week. Join the club - if you can find it.

Have been a bit busy this week with my dad being here and lesley being ill in bed with food poisoning since she got back from Spain. Dad going back tomorrow, and Lesley well enough today to have a cup of coffee, so things should be getting back to normal soon.

Had a call from my CC company last week, have I made any cash withdrawals in Hounslow? Three were attempted on such-and-such a date. No I haven't, so card was blocked. They said someone must have skimmed it and found the PIN. I was impressed that their software could detect the anomalous event so quickly (they called me the day after the attempted withdrawals).

New card arrived today, letter says "it has the same pin as your old one".

Blogger Tim: Aha, there you are.

Am I missing something? If they were attempted withdrawals does that mean they didn't suss the pin?

And, you don't really need a different pin on your new card, do you - unless the perp did suss the pin and can get their hands on the new card?

Anyway, don't forget to put 4th Jan in your diary for an exciting evening out.

And I assume no CC until Sunday then, although I've put myself in as available just in case.

Blogger Steve: Great, I'll see one of you then. I was thinking of cycling to Celia's house near Northampton but it's 50 miles each way so I'm not sure.

Yes the new card will have a new number so you will need to update all of those internet shopping logins :) Be good if the software could detect the distance between two sequential transactions and work out that it's not possible to get there that quickly.

Bike tomorrow!
99 good feedbacks on eBay.
Just finished Saturday by Ian McEwan; did a Tim and didn't read the back cover - good job too. really enjoyed the book. Now on a Jefferey Deaver crime thing.

Blogger nick: They attempted 3 withdrawals in Hounslow - the first two were successful, the third was disallowed. So they must have known the PIN.

yes, the CC has a new number. I was just a bit surprised that they (CC company) knew what my old PIN was - I thought that this was info no-one had, and it just hashes the value I enter it in the cash machine and checks the hash code.

What colour is the Felt?

Blogger Steve: Is he havin' a laugh? Yellow. BTW the new shorts I got for my birthday are a lot more comfy than the Specialized ones. But how do you know when you buy this stuff? So do I get yet another pair in case they stop doing them at £27!

Blogger Tim: He's havin' a laugh. And comfy shorts sounds like cheating to me.

Nick, do the card company have to know your pin in order to make that pin still work for the new card?
